What to pack on a road trip to the lake?

One of the perks of living in Pomona, Southern California is a very expansive summer road trip option (even during spring).  Other than exploring the beaches on the California coast, I can think of at least 10 (top of mind) awesome lakes I can go with my family this spring.  Namely:

  1. Jenks Lake
  2. Lake Cuyamaca
  3. Lake Henshaw
  4. Lake Silverwood
  5. Lake Murray
  6. Lake Skinner
  7. Echo Park Lake
  8. Lake Gregory
  9. Castaic Lake
  10. Dixon Lake

Since I was a child, these 10 lakes have always been on my bucket list, and I must admit I am 2 lakes short of completing my list.  The awesome mountains and time on the water seemed a perfect spring road trip that fit our family lifestyle.

Now the question is, what to pack when going on this road trip? I can think of  a number of items to bring, but let me give you 5 of my favorites:

  1. Hat – the higher the elevation, the closer you are to the sun.  A hat can provide you some shelter from the sun other than your handy sun block.
  2. Hiking Shoes – You don’t go to the lake just to swim, there are awesome trails surrounding the lakes I have enumerated so it would be nice to take a long walk and explore the place so bring some comfortable hiking shoes before you go.
  3. Swim wear – You will definitely swim, kayak and perhaps do some fishing so it is best to bring something you can wear and get wet into. If you are staying for more than a day or two, I suggest you bring 2-3 pairs just to be on the safe side.
  4. Layers – Whether you are staying inside a tent, a log cabin or an RV, you need to watch out how the temperature change quickly in the lake. It might be warm and toasty during the day, but that can change dramatically during the afternoon towards the night.  Make sure you have something to keep you warm at night.  You might also consider bringing something to keep you from getting wet under a southern California spring shower.
  5. Trunk Organizer - Just make sure you’ve packed everything you need and kept everything organized. I strongly suggest you use a premium auto trunk organizer.   A premium auto trunk organizer can be used whether for storing travel snacks, organizing tools or keeping your kids' toys in one place, this premium car trunk organizer offers the ultimate auto storage solution.
