5 Things you need to do BEFORE going on a Family Vacation

Family Vacation

Going on a trip? Bringing the family? I am sure you are so excited just thinking of that soft powdery white sand of Bora-bora.  But are you ready?  Booked the flights, hotel, travel insurance, good to go? Normally, seasoned travelers prepare the following items before going on vacation:

  1. Research the place,
  2. Check the weather,
  3. Get flu shots or vaccines,
  4. Print the boarding passes and hotel confirmation.

Easy peasy! All of these four things are essential to your vacation.  But allow me to add another five to this list.

  1. Inform your bank / credit card about your trip

It is best to tell your bank / credit card that you are going on a trip.  Most banks are very quick to jump the gun in freezing your account when they notice any unusual activity specially when the activity is on the other side of the globe.  Just give them a call that you are going to Asia or Caribbean so they won’t be surprised if suddenly somebody charges your card for a cocktail in a hotel of the beach of Boracay Island.

  1. Buy some local currency prior to the trip

If you have local currency handy as soon as you arrive at the airport, it will be very convenient for you to purchase food or pay the cab.  You might find this advice very practical if not convenient as soon as you exit Phuket International airport and you are craving for Biriyani Chicken and Roti.  It will be handy to have 40-50 baht in your pocket to pay for the food.

  1. Secure your home for your absence

Nowadays. You can install a lot of stuff in your home for security.  CCTV cameras can now be monitored using an app on your phone.  Floodlights with motion sensors, home alarm systems, you name it and its available in the market. It would be great if you have all of this installed.  But don’t forget to inform your local police that you are living for several days. I am sure they will be more than happy to assist you.

  1. Bring Food Ready to Eat

Even seasoned travelers get sick with the local food they eat.  Mainly because they are not accustomed to the food available.  So for your first day in Bangkok or Bali, it is best that you have some food ready eat. Here are a few general ideas for foods and snacks that fare well on a plane:

  • Dried fruit
  • Sandwiches
  • Granola bars
  • Celery and carrot sticks with about 3 ounces of hummus
  • Beef Jerkies
  • Nuts (some may not be permitted due to passengers with severe allergies)
  1. Gate Check your Stroller and Car Seat
